Why Career counseling is important

Our project focused on the principal problem that almost every teenager in our society faces: a lack of career development and career counseling in the years of his/her intermediated studies. As stated in the previous blog, more than half of the students in college or intermediate are deprived of the precious guidance that would surely be crucial for their future professional life. Each job requires a conscious choice of career path and a different plan of development.

Keeping in mind, that everyone has his/her own set of talents, there should be a different style of counseling. So, our circle decided to organize an online career development event in which intermediate students were invited to sign up via google forms. Moreover, two guest speakers, one NED graduate, and one LUMS graduate were also there to guide the students about the selection of different fields, the choice of university for a specific field, and what skills one needs to pass the entry exams of top universities in Pakistan. The session was very informative and the most important thing which was asserted by the speakers was that every professional field has its worth as long as you have passion and interest in it and the concept of choosing a career on some relatives’ suggestions makes a bad impact for the student on years to come

Impact Generated

We selected this project to create the following impact on students:

● To provide career counseling to the students.

● To guide the students in enhancing personal/social competencies.

● To provide a channel of information and guidance to help students make an informed decision.

● Provide a list of universities that are an appropriate match for students according to their interests.

We served 20+ students and helped them to understand why a career is important and how you can choose your career according to your interest and field of specialization. One of our circle members (Hifzah) collaborated with a private college student to get enrolled in our workshop session and get a great learning opportunity.

We decided to change the workshop to QnA due to fewer resources and time

Challenges

“Challenges are what make life interesting. Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” — Joshua J. Marine

In our research, we identified a huge gap in career development for Intermediate students. There are no professional trainers in educational institutes who would educate or train students regarding career development or counseling. Issues that arose throughout the project first and the most important challenge was to gather many people to brief them on our concept and engage them. We had to give our best to make sure the session was entertaining enough to leave a lasting impression.

Sustainability

Career Counseling is a lifelong process but to make our project sustainable we keep in touch with the targeted students through an email and WhatsApp number until they get admission to the universities. We build a therapeutic relationship with them if they face any sort of hurdles or need any sort of guidance regarding universities or careers, they can approach us without any hesitations. We will arrange more sessions regarding scholarships and entry tests by inviting respected field guest speakers. We conduct the one-on-one session as we already told them about the one-on-one session in our last meeting. Through the career counseling and one-on-one session, we thought our youth how to think not what to think.
